Malaysia-wide: a third of the grid is past the drought line

SPEI-3 measures the last three months of water balance against the same season in the historical baseline. Readings below −0.5 are conventionally treated as drought conditions.

The national mean stops short of the −0.5 line. The distribution does not: roughly a third of Malaysia's grid cells are already past it. That gap between the average and the tail is the whole reason to look at this sub-nationally — a country-level number can read "mild" while a third of the map is not.

Where the dryness sits — and what is planted there

MDI (Multi-Drought Index) combines the water-balance signal with vegetation and soil-moisture indicators into one score per state. What makes the May 2026 reading worth a second look is not the number on its own — it is where it falls. Negeri Sembilan and Selangor sit inside the peninsula's core plantation geography, so the driest part of the map and the most planted part of the map are the same part of the map.

That overlap is the finding. A drought signal in a sparsely farmed area and the same signal across a planting belt carry very different consequences, and only a state-level view tells them apart.

The ENSO label is Neutral. The signal is not waiting for it.

The official relative index, RONI, read +0.47 for AMJ 2026 — below the +0.50 threshold, so basin-wide conditions are Neutral, not El Niño. The dryness above does not depend on that label: SPEI-3 and MDI are measured from observed water balance, vegetation and soil moisture, not derived from an ocean index. Waiting for a named El Niño before treating a planting belt as exposed means waiting for a headline that measurement has already overtaken.

How to read this if you carry the risk

For plantation lenders, crop insurers and buyers, the practical question is not "is Malaysia in drought" but "is my exposure in the third of the map that is". A book concentrated in Negeri Sembilan and Selangor and a book spread across all 16 states share the same national average and carry different risk.

What it is: a dated, state-level measurement of where water stress actually sat in May 2026 — the kind of number that belongs in a risk file because it can be checked later.
